During a bicycle trip along the Huangpu River in Shanghai, I saw many projects of redevelopment for the many industries located next to the river, such as West Bund (the biggest I’ve ever seen!). But these projects did not interest me as they altered too much, even demolished the former buildings and industrial complexes to replace them with « art districts », as always…
But then, I found one industrial compound that was really empty of cranes, really abandoned.
What I liked about this place was its peaceful atmosphere, the red brick architecture, the grass growing on the disused buildings.
Several traces of the past were still visible but not many. I noticed more precisely the slogans and hand-written security guidelines.
According to the « Shanghai difangzhi », I learned that it was the Fuel Supply Station for Huadong Electrical Power Industry. It was established in 1978 in the south of Shanghai. It has been abandoned for several years. However, the guards were not happy that I went in to visit the place so they did not give me any detail about its local history…
I thank Gui and Simon for joining me on this bicycle ride and being so patient, waiting for me outside while I explored this industrial compound.
If you are interested in disused industrial compounds, you can read many reports on this blog, for instance the Shougang in Beijing, the Coal Gas Factory in Datong, the Oxygen Plant in Hangzhou.
