Before I start this report, in such a context, I have to state something. People often ask me how I find the time to explore so many places. « Don’t you ever work? » Well, people, the thing is, this is my hobby. When I have free time, I don’t watch TV, I don’t surf online for hours, I don’t go shopping, I don’t follow the latest shocking « buzz » from the news anymore, I mainly do this. Maybe if more people went out or stayed away from their « usual » activities, not necessarily to explore abandoned places but to see the world, to confront the material reality of this world, they would be more open-minded and more creative and more original people… Well well… And now, I am very happy to share a new discovery, in the Zhuhai area.
On the way to the ecological island of Zhuhai, I saw parts of an abandoned building from the bus but thought it was ugly and probably empty. « Not really interesting »… But Gui, who was with me, suggested it could be an amusement parc as he had just heard the automatic voice at the bus stop say « XXX 游乐园 ». And so I just had time to notice some giant dragons next to the building, which could confirm this hypothesis. Therefore, I thank Gui because on that day, we found something quite amazing: an abandoned amusement parc, which does not have much information online… Even « Delta Urbex », a super good urbexer from Zhuhai, did not take photos of that one…!
After researching this place, I could still find an image of its original appearance.
Now, it looks very different.
This park was built in 2004 and closed down in 2007 because of financial issues. That makes it abandoned for almost ten years! Unfortunately, nothing much remains except for the four dragons at the entrance gate, all in perfect shape!
Typhoons are frequent…
How did we manage to go in? The funny discovery is that typhoons can be very violent in the Zhuhai area, and that is why there were a lot of broken windows at the entrance gate…
Traces of the parc: murals
I have to admit, very few items remained in this large space. But all over the place, one can appreciate the long-lasting murals, which suggest there used to be many attractions before.
The quality of the paint must have been quite good, because when one knows how heavily it can rain in this region, I have to admit the murals looked good after ten years of abandonement.
Traces of the parc: an animal-themed labyrinth
I was still very happy to have visited this place, because a labyrinth remained! And it is a very cute one, with a big snake-shaped entrance and animals inside… But it was not so hard to find the right way, it was indeed designed for children.
The go-kart track
There are people producing honey who set up beehives in the alleys of the parc. By going a little further, one can find a small overgrown go-kart track.
This is also the territory of one stray dog, but it was not so threatening.
If one goes out of the park from that track, one will find an open (and bigger) go-kart area.
Traces of the parc: demolished spaces…
Clearly, everything else had been sold, removed or demolished in the park space. The last traces were a few empty buildings.
There used to be a « house of wild animals » like snakes. It is now the house of poultry.
To end this report, I will thank the last worker in the park (there used to be more than 100 people working in this place!), who now raises organic chicken (fed with rice only!), grows organic crops in the go-kart track, and who offered us organic tropical bananas. They tasted great!
If you would like to know about another derelict amusement park (also with very few remaining items) in China, you can read my reports about Beijing Amusement Park, part 1 and part 2.
